get started with solstone.
a personal memory platform. what you share with the solstone app goes into your journal, on a computer you own.
the solstone app
takes in what you choose to share from your devices.
your journal
keeps it organized and searchable on your mac, windows or linux computer.
start on one computer. connect more devices to the same journal whenever you're ready.
early days. solstone is open source and hands-on. expect rough edges; linux setup uses the terminal. we're here to help.
install on your device
choose the device you're setting up.
on your mac
Apple Silicon and macos 15 or later required. Intel macs aren't supported.
already have a journal? just install the solstone app and connect it to your existing journal.
-
create your journal first
install and open the journal app. choose a name and a place for your journal. then choose open your journal to read it in your browser.
-
connect the solstone app
install and open the solstone app. in settings, choose journal to connect. for a journal on this mac, confirm the one it finds. follow the prompts to choose what you share.
prefer the terminal?
install both mac apps with one command:
curl -fsSL https://solstone.app/install.sh | sh -s -- --components all
for just one, replace all with journal or app. the installer verifies the download and puts the app in /Applications. updates stay inside each app.
installed the journal from the terminal before?
install the journal app, then open it. the journal app adopts an older journal only when it can verify the installation it is taking over. if anything is unclear, it stops and tells you what needs attention. your journal stays where it is. contact support if you need a hand.
journal on another computer?
in your journal, open network and choose add a device. copy the pairing link. in the solstone app's journal settings, choose pair to a journal on another device, paste the link, and confirm it's your journal.
on your linux computer
journal: Intel/AMD or ARM. desktop app: Intel/AMD (x86_64).
already have a journal? add the desktop app and connect it to your existing journal.
-
set up your journal
the installer verifies its downloads with minisign, so add it first if you don't have it:
sudo apt install minisign, sudo dnf install minisignorsudo pacman -S minisign. not sure which? run the command below. if minisign is missing, the installer stops before changing anything and says how to add it.run this command in your terminal. it installs your journal and starts it.
curl -fsSL https://solstone.app/install.sh | sh
then open your journal in your browser and follow setup.
-
add the desktop app
the solstone app takes in what you share from this desktop, and all of it goes into your journal. its setup guide includes the packages your system needs.
on your windows computer
windows 10 (22H2) or 11 on Intel/AMD (x64). no administrator access needed to install. the journal installer is about 1.1 GB. the local model needs a compatible GPU; without one, thinking needs your own model. transcription runs on this PC.

your journal stays yours
your journal is a folder on your computer, in open formats. you can read it, move it, and back it up yourself. your journal is always private, only yours.
where does the thinking happen?
you choose during setup. your journal stays on your computer whichever you choose.
on windows, the local model needs a compatible GPU, and confidential processing isn't available there.
local, the default
a model runs on this computer. setup checks that your machine can run it before anything downloads.
your own model
bring your own provider key (Claude, Gemini, or GPT), or use an OpenAI-compatible endpoint you run. sol pbc is never in the path.
confidential processing
available to approved scouts. think off your device on confidential hardware sol pbc runs. no content is retained · no human reviews it · nothing is used to train. how it works
nothing is chosen for you silently. if no model is set, the solstone app tells you and waits.
