get started
what you share with the solstone app goes into your journal, on a computer you own. set up the journal first, then add the solstone app on each device you want to share from.
install
choose the computer your journal will live on.
choose the device you're adding. it connects to the journal you already have.
on your mac
an Apple silicon mac (M1 or newer) with macos 15 or later. Intel macs aren't supported.
-
get both mac apps
one download has the journal app and the solstone app. drag both to Applications.
-
create your journal first
open the journal app. choose where your journal lives, and lock in its mark: two shapes and two words that are your journal's own, so you can always tell which journal is yours. then choose open your journal to read it in your browser.
-
connect the solstone app
install and open the solstone app.open the solstone app. in settings, choose journal to connect. for a journal on your mac, confirm the one it finds. follow the prompts to choose what you share.
check it's ours. both mac apps are signed by sol pbc and notarized by Apple. the journal's signed release records are on trust.solstone.app.
prefer the terminal?
install both mac apps with one command:
curl -fsSL https://solstone.app/install.sh | sh -s -- --components all
for just one, replace all with journal or app. the installer verifies the download and puts the app in /Applications. updates stay inside each app.
installed the journal from the terminal before?
install the journal app, then open it. the journal app adopts an older journal only when it can verify the installation it is taking over. if anything is unclear, it stops and tells you what needs attention. your journal stays where it is. contact support if you need a hand.
journal on another computer?
in your journal, open network and choose pair a device. copy the pairing link. in the solstone app's journal settings, choose pair to a journal on another device, paste the link, and confirm it's your journal.
on your linux computer
journal: x86_64 (Intel or AMD) or arm64. desktop app: x86_64 only. not sure which you have? uname -m prints x86_64, or aarch64 on arm64. anything else isn't supported.
-
set up your journal
the installer verifies its downloads with minisign, so add it first if you don't have it:
sudo apt install minisign, sudo dnf install minisignorsudo pacman -S minisign. not sure which? run the command below. if minisign is missing, the installer stops before changing anything and says how to add it.run this command in your terminal. it installs your journal and starts it.
curl -fsSL https://solstone.app/install.sh | sh
then open your journal in your browser and follow setup.
-
add the desktop app
the solstone app takes in what you share from your desktop, and all of it goes into your journal. its setup guide includes the packages your system needs.
check it's ours. the journal installer verifies every download with minisign before it installs anything, and the desktop app's setup guide has you check its signature yourself. the journal's signed release records are on trust.solstone.app.
on your windows computer
windows 10 (22H2) or 11 on x86_64 (Intel or AMD, shown as x64 in windows settings). no administrator access needed to install. the journal installer is about 1.1 GB. the local model needs a compatible GPU; without one, thinking needs your own model. transcription runs on your PC.
-
set up your journal
download and run the journal installer. then open journal from the Start menu: it sets up your journal and shows its mark, and it's where you start or stop your journal and manage updates and paired devices.
-
connect the solstone app
install the solstone app, then connect it to your journal and choose what you share.

from your terminal
for tmux on an Apple silicon mac (M1 or newer), or on x86_64 (Intel or AMD) or arm64 linux, with a journal already set up.
solstone-tmux brings what you share from your terminal sessions into your journal. it can run alongside the desktop app.
check it's ours. its setup guide has you verify each download with minisign before you install it.

what your device will ask
the solstone app only takes in the sources you turn on, and all of it goes into your journal. your device asks your permission the first time.
- mac
- the microphone for audio, and screen & system audio recording for your screen and the sound your mac plays. it also asks to find devices on your local network, so the solstone app can find your journal.
- linux
- your desktop asks which screen to share when you turn on your screen as a source.
- windows
- while our signing reputation builds, windows may warn that it couldn't verify the solstone app because it isn't commonly downloaded. the publisher it shows is sol pbc. after that, you choose what you share inside the solstone app. when you first open network in your journal to pair a device, windows asks whether to let it on your network; choose allow, so your devices can reach it.
- iphone and ipad
- the microphone and your location, each when you turn on the source that needs it; the camera, to scan your journal's pairing code; your local network, to reach your journal; and notifications, if you turn them on. the app asks for your precise location; you can choose approximate when it asks, or later in settings. your screen goes into your journal only while you broadcast it: you start it from the app, iphone shows its own screen-broadcast sheet, and you stop it there or from the red bar at the top of your screen.
- android
- the microphone and your location, each when you turn on the source that needs it; the camera, to scan your journal's pairing code or when you turn it on as a source; and notifications the first time you start sharing.
with audio on, the voices of people around you can go into your journal too, so let them know first. solstone and recording laws
you can pause any source, or turn it off, from the solstone app.
where does the thinking happen?
you choose during setup. your journal stays on your computer whichever you choose; what each choice sends, and to whom, is below.
on windows, the local model needs a compatible GPU, and confidential processing isn't available there.
local, the default
a model runs on your computer. setup checks that your machine can run it before anything downloads.
your own model
bring your own provider key (Claude, Gemini, or GPT), or use an OpenAI-compatible endpoint you run. your provider sees what your journal sends it for thinking, under its own terms, and you pay it directly. sol pbc is never in the path.
confidential processing
available to approved scouts. think off your device on confidential hardware sol pbc runs. no content is retained · no human reviews it · nothing is used to train. how it works
nothing is chosen for you silently. if no model is set, your journal tells you and waits.
connect your agent
the agents you already use can work from your journal. you choose which ones.
on the same computer
any agent that speaks MCP can connect to your journal from the same computer. through this connection, your agent can search and read your journal and keep notes of its own there. it can't add, change, or delete anything else.
- in your journal, open agents. on a mac or on windows it's also in the journal app, and on the journal's computer it's at localhost:5015/app/agents.
- choose connect an agent, then on this computer, then make a pairing code. the code works once and expires after 10 minutes.
- add your journal to your agent with the line the agents app shows for it. on every computer, that line points your agent at
http://127.0.0.1:7659/mcp. - your browser opens your journal's page. choose what the agent may see, enter the code, and connect.
on a mac or on windows, with Claude Code, the line is:
claude mcp add --transport http journal "http://127.0.0.1:7659/mcp"
then type /mcp in Claude Code, choose journal, and authenticate.
on linux, setting up your journal also adds a solstone skill for Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI, whether or not they're installed yet, so an agent you install later already has it. solstone skills list shows it. with the skill, an agent in any project can search your journal, look up a person, or read a transcript.
on your wifi or VPN
turn it on in your journal's agents app. an agent pairs with a code from your journal, and it only works on the route it paired through.
from anywhere
turn on solstone.me, an address for your journal that sol pbc runs, for $5 a year. or use a tunnel of your own: you never have to pay us.
your journal's agents app works with your own route or with solstone.me; solstone.me is the address, and the agents app is where you manage what connects.
pair a phone, if you like
your journal works from your computer alone, so you can skip this. to add your iphone, ipad or android phone, get the solstone app from its store, then pair it with your journal on your mac, windows or linux computer: in your journal, open network and choose pair a device.
day 1, and tomorrow morning
day 1
what you share goes into your journal as you go. open it in your browser to read your day. as your journal works through what came in, transcripts fill in, and with a model set in step 3, so do the people in them and your meetings.
tomorrow morning
a briefing for the day ahead is waiting in your journal, written from your own material by the model you chose. your agents can read it too.
updating your journal
update the journal on the computer that runs it. the solstone app and your journal update separately, so their version numbers can differ.
on mac: open the journal app and choose updates in its sidebar. the solstone app has its own updates pane in settings. manual journal update instructions.
on windows: open journal from the Start menu and manage updates there.
on linux: follow the journal upgrade guide.
after updating, reopen your journal and check the version in its status details.
early days. on a mac, on windows and on your phone, solstone installs like any app. on linux, setup takes a step in the terminal. expect a few rough edges, and tell us when you find one.
